Mistakes you shouldn’t make when wedding dress shopping

Every bride-to-be dreams about her dress and often rushes to get it, but before hitting the boutique, you should read our advice to avoid some mistakes.

Too many brides jump into the first wedding dress boutique before anything else… Don’t be too impatient, taking time is always a good thing! It is very important to have the main details of your wedding day in place before you can truly shop for a gown. In fact, many factors can influence the style of the dress and new ideas can come up while you’re wedding planning.

Most of the time, a bride trying on dresses after dresses, is just a “not well prepared” bride, and that can be a big mistake. In fact, if you are trying on too many dresses without finding the right one it is undoubtedly because you are missing some VIBI (Very Important Bride Information) like your morphology, fashion trend, colorimetry, your theme, etc. As a wedding expert, I always go dress shopping with my clients accompanied by one of our image consultant or personal shopper.

Internet…what a fabulous invention isn’t it? But when it comes to wedding dresses, I say NO to the web. Your dress is one of the masterpieces of this unforgettable-to-be day and cannot be neglected. You need to know and make sure the color matches what you expect if the material is of good quality, that the size is the right one to avoid extra alteration cost; unfortunately, internet can’t give you this guarantee. As a bride-to-be, you have to try on dresses in person, before purchasing.

We already know it is probably the most important dress you will ever wear, and you want it to be absolutely perfect. But having a dozen of different opinions makes it much harder than you could imagine and it definitely could bring you farther away from what you actually wish. At AMC, we think that brides-to-be do best with just their mom and maybe a sister or best friend and of course a wedding professional.

Wedding dress sales are very popular among brides, but you must keep in mind that too cheap of a price might mean an already sampled one, a damaged one, or even one with cheap quality. In these cases, you could lose more than what you think… alternation costs, repairs, and in the worst cases be obligated to buy another dress.

What is the ideal wedding budget?

What is the ideal wedding budget?

How much does a wedding really cost?

Such a question! This is the number one question from the clients who contact us.

No need for more suspense, there is no ideal wedding budget; I prefer using the term “realistic budget”, let me explain it to you…

First of all: you need to be aware of what your budget limit is and what you can get with it. Miami is an expensive city and vendors are not cheap. Any professional wedding planner will give you a quote right away with an “all inclusive” pricing; if that’s the case, then please, RUN AWAY!!

Second advice: make sure you have your funds available when you start planning your wedding budget. Do not make plan on money you do not have, because you could lose more than what you think if your plans do not go well and if you are late with vendor’s payments.

Once you have determined your wedding budget, you’ll have to think about these 3 very important things:

  • The type of venue you want
  • The number of guests you are expecting
  • The type of food you want

In fact, these 3 things will tell you if you are realistic about your budget or not.

Third advice: Pinterest and Instagram pictures are not the real life! Most of the pictures on these social media are photoshopped and come from photographer in showrooms or millions dollars weddings. Does this mean you cannot have a beautiful wedding décor? Of course not, but don’t be too obsessed with unreal pictures.

Fourth advice: every wedding day  is unique and needs to match with your personality and your story. Do not go with cheap looking décor or “already included décor package”, you need to make it your own.

Fifth advice: Get a wedding planner! If you think you cannot afford the Full wedding planning package or if you simply want to plan it by yourself, we actually have different packages with different pricing. Also, you need to find the right wedding planner, everybody is different and not every wedding planner will be good for you. However, a good wedding expert will always be able to give you a professional and experienced advice to assist you manage your budget reasonably.

Last advice… Your wedding day  will probably be one of the most beautiful days of your life, it doesn’t matter whether you decide to DIY (Do-it-Yourself) or hire a planner; you need to ENJOY it!

Do I need the wedding planner?

A lot of couples, who contact us at Haute Couture Events, ask us if they really need a planner. In fact, some couples think they can plan their own weddings and skip using the wedding planner. If you answer “no” to any of these following questions, you should probably think about contacting planners to have a discussion.

Are you ready to work after work?

Life can already be overwhelming with work or school, in this case, a wedding planner can be a huge asset for keeping the planning process moving while you are busy living your daily life.

Plus, most vendors and wedding providers have normal business hours (Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm) and are closed on weekends. You need to be aware that you will have to make time for them during the day or take days off from work to get all of your planning done.

Do you have free time?

Like the first one, this question is very important and you should ask yourself if you have enough free time to visit venues, meet with vendors, ask for quotes, compare, and very often, waste a lot of your time before finally finding what matches the best with your budget and expectations. As an estimate for you, a full wedding planning requires between 120  and 150 hours for a professional.

Are you extremely well organized?

Being very well organized, follow schedule, be punctual and deadline oriented is a must! You can actually lose more than what you think. If you are not, you definitely need a wedding planner who will keep the planning on time, give you updates and follow up about it and on the big day.

Do you know how to manage your budget?

Managing a budget is not easy, especially for a wedding. It has never been a secret that weddings can be pricey affairs and even more in Miami.

The price can change from simple to double just depending on the venue, the date, type of food, type of ceremony/reception, décor and much more… As wedding planners, we know how to negotiate and most often already have discounted pricing based on previous events we brought to our preferred vendors.

Will you be able to manage your day-of?

Have you ever thought about the coordination of your big day? Most of the brides and grooms do not have much time during the day of to make the décor, prepare the tables and manage the vendors’ arrivals.

The most popular wedding theme Ideas

One of the most important things which will define your wedding is its Theme. We understand how much the decoration is important for a wedding, but also how hard it can be to make a decision about it. We often see wonderful wedding pictures on Instagram, Pinterest, etc. but you have to realize that most of them come from telltale venues and end up being photoshopped as to appear like something from a fairytale. In fact, those are simply meant to look this way but are not real in the slightest.

At Haute Couture Events, we have been hard at work to put ourselves in your shoes and help you find the best décor and create the most amazing atmosphere to dazzle your guests on your wedding day.

Even if we believe that every wedding is unique, just for you, we made a top 5 of the most popular themes.  Here are the 5 hottest trends:

Rustic Chic

By definition, rustic defines what you will find in the countryside. In the wedding industry, “Rustic” is being used for weddings that might have an outdoor venue, incorporating wood, DIY (Do-It-Yourself) craft, tons of natural or nature-inspired elements. In fact, the word has taken on such a broad meaning that there is no longer a specific definition.

It’s one of the hottest trends of the year, and can be tailored to any event by adding the “Shabby Chic”, “Cowboy style” or “Eco Friendly Style” touch!

Like any other popular themes that you will discover in our Top 5 today, you really have to make it your own! Don’t forget, after all this is your day!

Most of our clients wonder what the real difference between Rustic and Vintage is. At first sight it would appear to be similar; however, there is a huge difference. In fact, Vintage uses more refined furnishings, from the early 1900’s to the 1950s, like Mason jar, French painted chairs, gilded sconces, lace fabrics etc. which are typically more “chic” and “refined” than rustic.

Nevertheless, both can be combined and matched in a really gracious way, but remember one of the themes has to be more prevalent than the other one in order to avoid a “too much” effect.

Classic Romantic

The Romantic theme is timeless! What better word to define love than Romantic? Also called pure romance, this theme is based on flowers, pastel colors and crystal chandeliers; this beautiful trend will melt your heart!

As a tip, we want to remind you the color code! Never more than 3 colors at the same time and one of the colors need to be a neutral one (black, white or a material such as wood, iron, gold, steel, etc.)

Wedding on The Beach

Who has never dreamt about a wedding ceremony on the beach? The ocean, tons of sand, palm trees, your closest friends and family, you and your soulmate…

With a ceremony on the beach, you do not need a lot of imagination, the décor speaks for itself.

Check our “Best Miami beaches’ spot” blog post to know about the best spots to get married on the beach in Miami.

Fairytale / High drama

High Drama, also called Fairytale, is one of the most impressive and amazing wedding décor, wedding planner Guru David Tutera is famous for his incredible and luxury designs on his hit series, My Fair Wedding.

This theme is often composed by sprays of Phalaenopsis white orchids, Glamorous garden style décors, opulent chandeliers, huge centerpieces and touché of gold, however, a high drama/ fairytale décor is very complicated to complete and requires a wedding expert and event production team.

What is your favorite theme? Rustic? High Drama? Have a different spin? We want to know about yours! Tell us in the comments…

Contrary to Mid-beaches, Miami North beach is not too crowded and more family-oriented. Of course, it also offers large white sand and a little bit more privacy.

At Haute Couture Events, Key Biscayne is our favorite spot to get married in Miami. This place offers an amazing landscape for a wedding ceremony on the beach, with the beautiful Crandon Park surrounded by palm trees, “Caribbean” clear water, extreme white sand, barbecues and picnic tables; you will also enjoy the famous Bill Baggs Cape Florida Lighthouse, which is more than a simple lighthouse, being the oldest building in south Florida and a perfect spot for fun and original wedding pictures.

Bal Harbour

Bal Harbour situated in the north of Surfside is undoubtedly the place where there are the most millionaires per square feet than in any other city in the U.S. and it is also a safe and beautiful spot to get married in Miami Beach.

Why you should Get Married on The Beach in Miami ?

The Couple and the sea…

Tons of sand, thousands of small shells, hundreds of palm leaves and… 2 people (plus all the guests). Getting married on the beach in Miami has its charm and will convince everyone, even the silted singles.

How is it done? Should we book a few square feet of beach? Is there a “special” priest? Find all the answers to your questions, to help you understand how we work to make the most romantic weddings in the world.

A beautiful wedding…

It takes between 1 to 4 months to plan your wedding on the beach and complete all the necessary formalities. The choice of location, the choice of the vendors, décor, florist, signing all the papers and the preparation of the festivities…it takes a little method, you might need a planner!

In Miami, you can get married symbolically, civilly or religiously; if it’s a wedding journey and you go back to your country afterwards, then you will have to make it recognized when you arrived. Only a civil marriage, with the signing of a “civil wedding license”, has a legal status in the United States.

One, two, three, get married!

A symbolic marriage is not recognized in the US, and often not in your native country, and just serves to spread your love to everyone, to redo your vows or to make a wedding v 2.0 if all your Floridians friends could not be there in your first marriage.

A Religious marriage depends upon the religion of the bride and groom and takes place before a formal cleric (priest, rabbi, imam, etc.). Be aware that this person, regardless of the religion involved, may also act as a civil officiant and also sign the civil marriage contract, giving it legal value.

A Civil marriage is most of the time operated by a public notary or a clerk. If you are getting married through a civil ceremony, you should approach the Registrar of Civil Marriages for the district in which you intend to get married for information on how to proceed and make sure the person is a Marriage Officiant registered with the Office of the City Clerk before the wedding. There is no requirement to live in the district where you want to get married.

Where is it?

You can get married anywhere you want on the beaches of Miami. However, some “beaches” require a “wedding permit”. If you have a planner, she/he will probably include it in the fees and will take care of it for you. If you choose to plan your wedding yourself or just hire someone for the Day-Of Coordination (one of our most popular package) you will make sure to get the permit and be allowed to celebrate your union on the beach, without risks to get caught by authorities and mess up the most beautiful day of your life.

Yes! But…

Blue sky, pristine ocean, bright sun and in the middle: you, all white and dressed up! Yes! But…

– No need to wear shoes. (We are so comfortable with flip-flops!)

– You can go skiing for your honeymoon; you have seen enough of the beach!

– The beach is great: the number of guests is unlimited; any other venue can offer the same breathtaking view! (almost for free)

– Cost less than a “traditional” wedding in a venue, needless décor as well.

– Your wedding pictures will look amazing!

– It is better to be sure of the weather, and pray to avoid the rain and wind gusts.

– The hurricane season (from June to late October) remains a time to banish in your calendar: it is very hot and humid, and the weather changes in an instant.

– Manage your time because a wedding with a romantic sunset can turn into a nocturnal ceremony where we do not see 1 meter ahead.

As an experienced wedding and event planner, I advise everyone who plans to get married on the beach to have a planner. Even if you hire a planner just for the Day-of coordination, we will be able to advise you on the best spot to have maximum privacy and intimacy, get best deals with vendors, professional décor, plan B in case of bad weather and see the unforeseen!

You would be surprised at how beautiful yet at the same time complicated the planning could be.
